Canadian County Emergency Manager Announces FEMA Reimbursements for Medically Required Electric Generators
Canadian County Emergency Manager, Tim Smith, has announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Individuals and Household’s Program and in conjunction with the State of Oklahoma has made possible reimbursement for the purchase or rental of a generator for medical purposes.
Eligible applicants may qualify if they meet the following conditions:
• The generator must be purchased or rented during an event that results from a Presidentially declared emergency or major disaster.
• The applicant’s dwelling must be the primary residence and must be located in an area designated for Individual Assistance.
• The applicant must provide proof of purchase or rental receipts for the generator.
• The generator must be required for a medically-required piece of equipment, including a medically-required refrigerator.
• Additionally there must be proof that the appliance or equipment was required for medical purposes (e.g. a letter from a physician stating such need)
Only those generators purchased or rented during the window provided by FEMA for the incident or the period from the time of declaration to the date power is restored to the dwelling, whichever comes first, are eligible for reimbursement. Reimbursement amounts are limited to the prevailing retail price for a 5.5 KW unit as determined by FEMA. Similarly, reimbursements for rental costs are again limited to prevailing rates for 5.5 KW units and will be limited to the period from initial rental until commercial power is restored.
If any other funding source for the generator is available to the applicant such as Medicare, Medicaid or insurance, FEMA Funding is not available as duplicate payments are prohibited by law. In addition, repairs or replacement of disaster damaged generators may be eligible for reimbursement. Under these circumstance the applicant need not provide proof of a verifiable medical need for the generator.
